A Rising Stem Gate Valve uses a threaded stem attached to a wedge gate. Rotating the handwheel turns the stem nut, raising or lowering the stem and gate along internal body guides.
Opening the valve lifts the gate completely clear of the flow passage. Closing it drives the wedge down against the body seats to form a tight seal. Because the gate moves perpendicular to the fluid flow, gate valves are designed for full-open or full-closed isolation rather than flow throttling.
